The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has confirmed the safe rescue of seventy-one (71) Ghanaian fishermen following a harrowing pirate attack at sea. In a press statement released today, the Ministry expressed “deep concern” over the rise in piracy targeting local vessels but noted that all 71 individuals are now safe.
THE RESCUE OPERATION The successful recovery of the fishermen was the result of a high-level coordinated effort. The Ministry extended commendations to:
The Ghana Armed Forces and Ghana Navy for their professional and swift tactical response.
The Office of the President for high-level oversight.
-
Hon. Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui (MP for Awutu Senya West), who played a critical role in coordinating between state institutions and the affected fishing communities.
GOVERNMENT RESPONSE & REFORM The government is moving to prevent future incidents by leveraging the recently enacted Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025 (Act 1146). This new law is designed to strengthen enforcement and safety mechanisms across the sector.
According to the Ministry, several new security and welfare measures are currently being rolled out, including:
Advanced Tracking: The introduction of GPS tracking and long-range communication systems specifically for artisanal (small-scale) vessels.
-
Surveillance: Increased naval patrol capacity to improve deterrence and rapid response times.
Fishermen Welfare: New registration and licensing protocols, alongside the rollout of insurance and pension schemes for those in the industry.
A CALL FOR VIGILANCE The Ministry reminded the public that the fisheries sector remains a “vital pillar” for Ghana’s food security and coastal stability. Officials are urging all fishing communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious maritime activities immediately to the authorities.
