The rights and welfare of persons with disabilities in Ghana have received renewed attention as the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, met with a delegation from the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD), led by its President, Mr. Joseph Atsu Humadzi. This engagement underscores the shared commitment to advancing disability-inclusive policies and social protection services across the country.

This marks the second formal engagement between the Federation and the Ministry, building on earlier discussions aimed at enhancing access to social protection interventions, promoting inclusive education, and improving services for children, caregivers, and persons with disabilities.
During the meeting, the delegation highlighted critical priorities for advancing disability inclusion in Ghana:

-
Review and re-enactment of the Persons with Disability Act to align fully with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)
-
Upgrading rehabilitation and vocational training centres nationwide to expand skills development and economic opportunities
-
Implementation of employment quotas to increase job access for persons with disabilities
-
Enhanced stakeholder education and coordination among agencies to ensure inclusive, responsive, and effective programs
-
Unity within the disability sector to strengthen advocacy and maximize limited resources
In response, the Minister expressed appreciation for the Federation’s continued engagement and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities. She assured the delegation that their recommendations would inform ongoing policy reforms and program reviews, emphasizing that disability inclusion remains a priority under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.

This collaboration between government and civil society reflects a shared vision for a more inclusive Ghana, where persons with disabilities can access opportunities, contribute fully to society, and enjoy their rights without barriers.
