Banking on Glory: UMB Thrash UBA 7–0 in the Bankers League

Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) sent shockwaves through the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) Football League after humiliating United Bank for Africa (UBA) with a crushing 7–0 victory on September 27. With just two games left in the 2025 season, the title race is reaching fever pitch.

At McDan Park and St. Thomas turf, the atmosphere was electric as the battle for glory — and survival — intensified. UMB, perched at the summit, showed no mercy, stretching their lead to 29 points with a formidable +20 goal difference. At the other end of the table, UBA’s nightmare season plunged deeper, stuck on two points with a daunting -25 goal deficit that all but seals their relegation fate.

The weekend’s action kicked off with a 2-2 draw between National Investment Bank (NIB) and Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG), a result that keeps both sides trailing the leaders. Stanbic Bank and FirstBank followed with a hard-fought 1-1 stalemate, before Omnibsic Bank edged Absa 1-0 to maintain their quiet but steady charge up the ladder.

Republic Bank earned a 2-1 win over GTCO, exploiting a fragile defence that has struggled all season. Later, NIB stunned CAL Bank with a 2-0 victory, while FirstBank bounced back to outclass CBG 2-0. Omnibsic added momentum with another 2-1 triumph over GTCO in a lively contest.

The headline clash, however, belonged to UMB. Ruthless in attack and unyielding at the back, they tore UBA apart in a 7-0 demolition that will be remembered as one of the league’s most emphatic statements of dominance.

Zenith and Access Bank wrapped up the round with a thrilling 2-2 draw, keeping their slim hopes alive.

After Week 10, the top of the table remains finely poised:

  • 1st: UMB – 29 pts (+20)

  • 2nd: GCB – 26 pts (+10)

  • 3rd: Omnibsic – 25 pts (+10)

  • 4th: NIB – 24 pts (+17)

  • 5th: Absa – 22 pts (+8)

  • 6th: Stanbic – 20 pts (-4)

At the bottom, UBA sit rock-bottom with just two points, while GTCO (7 pts, -10) and Société Générale (10 pts, -11) remain in the relegation fight.

Now in its sixth year since debuting in 2018, the Bankers League has cemented its place as Accra’s premier corporate football spectacle — blending competition, camaraderie, and high drama. With only two matchdays left, the race for the crown promises nothing short of fireworks.
