The Fisheries Commission, in partnership with Henos Energy and Milton Systems Limited, has launched a pilot project to test the viability of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)-powered outboard motors for artisanal fishers in Ghana.

The pilot, running from February 11 to 24, 2026, seeks to assess LPG as an alternative fuel option within Ghana’s fisheries sector. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to promote cleaner energy solutions, reduce carbon footprints, and advance sustainable and cost-effective fishing practices nationwide.

Selected artisanal fishers from Akateng, Dzameni, and Kpando are participating in the exercise. The fishers are testing LPG-powered outboard motors on their fishing canoes and providing operational feedback based on real-time usage.
According to the Fisheries Commission, the pilot will generate data on fuel consumption patterns, operational costs, performance efficiency, and fishers’ perceptions. The information gathered will help determine whether LPG-powered motors present a viable and sustainable alternative for Ghana’s artisanal fishing industry.

The project is expected to inform future policy decisions regarding the potential adoption and scaling of LPG-powered outboard motors across the country.
Stakeholders say the initiative represents an important step toward modernizing Ghana’s fisheries sector while safeguarding the environment and supporting the livelihoods of fishing communities.
