Five Myths and Facts – About Contraception

When it comes to conversations about contraception, myths often travel faster than the truth. In many communities, especially among young people, misinformation spreads through whispers, social media posts, and cultural taboos — leaving fear and confusion in its wake. Yet the truth about contraception is simple: it saves lives, protects health, and empowers choice.

Let’s set the record straight on five of the most common myths.

Myth 1: “Contraception is unsafe.”

Fact: Modern contraceptives are among the safest and most thoroughly studied medical tools available today. Millions of women around the world use them safely. Health experts confirm that, when used correctly and chosen with proper guidance, contraceptives are far less risky than the health complications that can arise from unintended pregnancies. What really keeps people safe is access — access to accurate information and quality reproductive health services.

Myth 2: “Contraceptives cause abortion.”

Fact: No, they don’t. Contraceptives prevent pregnancy before it happens. They don’t disrupt an existing pregnancy. Emergency contraception, too, works by stopping ovulation or fertilization — it doesn’t terminate a pregnancy. It’s time to stop equating prevention with harm.

Myth 3: “Birth control damages fertility.”

Fact: Contraceptives don’t “ruin” fertility. Once you stop using them, your natural cycle resumes. For some methods, it may take a few months — but your ability to have children returns. What truly affects fertility more seriously? Untreated infections, poor reproductive care, and unsafe abortions — all of which proper contraception can help prevent.

Myth 4: “Natural methods are safer.”

Fact: Natural methods like tracking cycles or monitoring body temperature can work for some, but they require perfect consistency — and even then, they’re less effective than modern options. Calling them “safer” ignores the real risk of unintended pregnancy and its potential complications. The safest method is the one that’s effective, accessible, and right for you.

Myth 5: “Single people shouldn’t use contraception.”

Fact: Contraception isn’t a symbol of promiscuity — it’s a symbol of responsibility. Everyone, regardless of marital status, deserves the right to protect their health and their future. Denying young or unmarried people access to contraceptives doesn’t stop sexual activity; it only increases the risk of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Every person has the right to make informed choices about their body — free from judgment, stigma, or coercion.

The truth?
Contraception is about freedom — the freedom to plan, to dream, and to live life on one’s own terms. Every myth we break brings us closer to a world where reproductive health is guided by facts, not fear.

Let’s keep the conversation going. Share the facts, challenge the myths, and stand up for the right of every person to make safe, informed choices about their bodies.

This advocacy message is inspired by UNFPA’s ongoing efforts to promote reproductive health rights and access to safe, modern contraceptive methods for all.
