Ghanaian football fans have sharply criticized Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, over comments many saw as politicizing the Black Queens’ historic run to the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Speaking in Parliament on Monday, July 21, 2025, Honorable Assafuah attributed the team’s achievement heir first semi-final appearance since 2016 to investments made in women’s football by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. He claimed that the NPP’s policies laid the foundation for developing female football talent and strengthening national teams, urging Ghanaians to acknowledge the party’s role in the Queens’ success.
However, the remarks were met with swift backlash online, with many football supporters accusing the MP of hijacking a national moment for partisan gain. Social media platforms were flooded with critical responses, with fans condemning the comments as “unnecessary,” “divisive,” and an attempt to score “cheap political points.”
“This is a win for the country, not for a political party,” one user on X (formerly Twitter) posted. Another added, “Instead of celebrating the players and encouraging them ahead of the semis, you are busy scoring cheap political points. Shameful.”
Critics argued that the MP’s comments overshadowed the players’ hard work and undermined a unifying national achievement. Many called on Honorable Assafuah to refrain from politicising sports and instead focus on supporting the team ahead of their crucial semi-final clash with hosts Morocco on Tuesday, July 22.
As the Black Queens aim for a spot in the final, fans are urging Ghanaians to rally behind the team and keep politics out of their moment of glory.
