Gender Minister Reaffirms Ghana’s Commitment to Human Rights as ACHPR Delegation Visits

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has reaffirmed Ghana’s strong commitment to protecting and promoting human rights, particularly the rights of women, children, and vulnerable groups.

She made this known when she hosted a high-level delegation from the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), led by Hon. Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie, the Commission’s Rapporteur on the Human Rights Situation in Ghana and Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa.

The visit formed part of a four-day Advocacy and Promotion Mission to Ghana, held from 29th September to 2nd October 2025, aimed at promoting the implementation of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the Maputo Protocol, and other regional human rights instruments.

The delegation’s mission focused on strengthening collaboration with the Government of Ghana, fostering greater awareness of women’s rights, and encouraging the timely submission of Ghana’s periodic reports under Article 62 of the African Charter.

Welcoming the team, Dr. Lartey highlighted several initiatives being implemented by her Ministry, including the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Policy, which seeks to give every child the best start in life. She also outlined ongoing efforts to eliminate child marriage, combat domestic violence, and establish sixteen protection shelters across the country to support survivors of abuse.

The Minister further underscored the government’s dedication to inclusive development, citing interventions to promote the welfare of persons with disabilities and the continued impact of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme in supporting poor and vulnerable households.

Dr. Lartey reiterated the Ministry’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the ACHPR and other partners to advance social justice, gender equality, and human rights in Ghana.

As part of their mission, the ACHPR delegation also held technical meetings with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, engaged civil society organizations, and visited Social Welfare Centres providing care and support to vulnerable individuals.

The visit underscored Ghana’s reputation as a key partner in advancing human rights in Africa and highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure that national development remains people-centered and rights-based.
