The Ministry of Health has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to life-saving care as it hosted Dame Ann Gloag, Trustee of Mercy Ships, and her delegation in Accra. The courtesy call on Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh marked a key milestone in preparations for the arrival of the Global Mercy hospital ship, which is set to dock in Ghana in 2026 for an 11-month medical mission.
Dame Ann outlined Mercy Ships’ plans to provide thousands of free surgical procedures—from cleft palate repairs and cataract surgeries to tumor removals—while also delivering intensive training to Ghanaian health professionals. She stressed that the mission is powered by volunteerism, with hundreds of surgeons, nurses, and specialists from around the globe funding their own service to give hope and healing to Ghanaians.
Hon. Mintah Akandoh praised the collaboration with Mercy Ships and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares Initiative), emphasizing that the effort is not charity, but a strategic partnership aligned with Ghana’s health priorities.
“This is about restoring dignity, saving lives, and strengthening our health workforce long after the ship departs,” he said.
Preparations are underway to coordinate logistics, patient screening, and training programs ahead of the ship’s arrival.
