Kwanzaa Fest Brings African Heritage to Life in Elmina

Ahomka Fie in Elmina, in Ghana’s Central Region, came alive over the weekend as culture, creativity, and community converged for Kwanzaa Fest, a vibrant celebration of African and African diaspora heritage.

The event brought together residents, creatives, and cultural enthusiasts for a rich display of art, music, storytelling, and traditional performances, offering an immersive experience rooted in African identity and shared history. From rhythmic drumbeats to spoken word and visual art, Kwanzaa Fest created a space for reflection, unity, and cultural pride.

The festival was spearheaded by Akan Collective, a cultural organization and Made-in-Ghana artisan shop based in Elmina, known for its commitment to preserving heritage, supporting local artists, and promoting cultural education. The event was supported by Waxprint Media, the Ghana Tourism Authority, Aquarius Rising, and Ahomka FM, whose collective efforts ensured a successful celebration.

Speaking on the significance of the festival, Raphael Amissah, Manager of Akan Collective, described Kwanzaa Fest as more than an event, noting that it is a deliberate effort to reconnect communities—especially the youth—to African values, creativity, and history.

“Kwanzaa Fest is about celebrating who we are, where we come from, and the creative power within our communities,” he said. “By centering African stories, art, and craftsmanship, we create opportunities for learning, expression, and economic empowerment.”

Participants and visitors praised the festival for creating a welcoming environment that blended cultural education with entertainment, while also spotlighting local talent and artisans. The involvement of the Ghana Tourism Authority further highlighted the role of cultural festivals in positioning Elmina as a key destination for heritage tourism.

As Elmina continues to reclaim and showcase its rich cultural narrative, Kwanzaa Fest stands out as a growing platform that strengthens community bonds, supports creative industries, and celebrates Africa’s enduring cultural legacy.
