The 2025 National Conference of Chief Fishermen and Queen Fishmongers opened on a successful note at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), marking a major highlight of this year’s World Fisheries Day celebrations.

Day One of the conference brought together Chief Fishermen, Queen Fishmongers, policymakers, academics, civil society organisations, and development partners to reflect on the theme: Resetting Fisheries — Chief Fishermen and Fishmongers as Guardians and Partners in Sustainable Fisheries Management.
Participants engaged in extensive discussions on the urgent need to safeguard Ghana’s marine resources, strengthen traditional leadership roles in fisheries management, and promote sustainable practices across coastal communities. Speakers emphasised the importance of collaboration between traditional authorities and state institutions in restoring fish stocks and improving livelihoods.

According to organisers, the contributions made during the opening day have laid a strong foundation for rethinking Ghana’s fisheries governance and driving long-term reforms. The conference continues with further technical sessions aimed at shaping a more resilient and sustainable future for the sector.
