A 17-year-old second-year student of Nkwanta Senior High School tragically lost his life after drowning at the collapsed Gyelen Bridge in the Bontibor farming community of the Oti Region.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, August 17, while the second-year student was returning home from the farm.
The bridge, which was constructed about a year ago, collapsed following recent torrential rains, cutting off the community from major commercial and social activities. Residents had long raised concerns about the poor quality of materials used in the project, but their complaints went unheeded.
Leadership of the farming community are calling on the President and his NDC administration, to act swiftly in fixing the bridge making it highly dependable for use, the leadership insists the community cannot continue to lose lives, especially women and children, due to poor infrastructure.
The Paramount Chief of the Ntrubo North Traditional Area also highlighted that the deplorable state of the roads from Brewaniase through Pusupu to Bontibor and Salifu-Krom continues to endanger residents’ safety and threaten their livelihoods.
God have mercy…
