More than 7,000 nurses and midwives serving in public health facilities across Ghana have taken to the streets to protest the government’s failure to pay them eight months of salary arrears.
The group, known as the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives, says its members have been without pay since January 2025, pushing many into severe financial and emotional distress. Despite receiving financial clearance—a prerequisite for salary disbursement—the coalition argues that government has yet to fulfill its responsibility.
The protest also draws attention to a recurring problem in the public sector, where newly recruited staff often endure long delays in receiving their first salaries.
As of press time, the Ministries of Health and Finance had not issued a response or provided a payment timeline. The coalition has vowed to intensify its campaign until the arrears are settled, insisting that dedication to saving lives deserves timely and consistent compensation.
