At this year’s Senior High Schools Renewable Energy Challenge, students of Opoku Ware School in the Ashanti Region drew attention with their Smart Aquaponics System—a farming model that produces crops and fish in a single, self-sustaining setup.
The design merges aquaculture with hydroponics, recycling fish waste into organic plant nutrients while the plants naturally purify the water for the fish. This closed-loop process minimises waste, conserves resources, and promotes eco-friendly food production.
Opoku Ware is among eight schools from the southern zone shortlisted for the 6th edition of the contest, which encourages young innovators to develop practical renewable energy solutions to everyday problems. The challenge, organised by the Energy Commission, seeks to nurture climate-conscious thinking and sustainable innovation among Ghana’s youth.
