The University of Cape Coast has taken a bold step in advancing digital education by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Astria Learning, a United States–based EdTech organisation, to expand access to higher learning across borders.

The agreement will enable UCC to deliver short courses, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, through Astria Learning’s digital platforms — breaking geographical barriers and widening participation in quality education.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Professor Denis Aheto, and the Chief Executive Officer of Astria Learning, Dr. Jeff Bordes, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions.
Professor Aheto described the partnership as a significant milestone in UCC’s digital transformation journey, positioning the University as a regional leader in innovation and higher education modernisation. He emphasised that the platform would enhance access, promote international collaboration and allow students to engage with global peers while gaining exposure to diverse cultures.

As part of due diligence, UCC dispatched a delegation on a benchmarking visit to the University of Malawi eCampus and Astria Learning to study the operational model.
According to Professor Aheto, the visit provided clarity on governance arrangements, admissions and quality assurance mechanisms, recruitment strategies and financial sustainability frameworks — elements critical to ensuring a robust and credible digital learning ecosystem.

He further noted that the partnership would boost UCC’s international visibility, expand global student recruitment, strengthen operational efficiency and support scalable growth of academic programmes.
Describing the collaboration as strategically sound and forward-thinking, Professor Aheto said it would usher UCC into a new era of digital innovation, broaden access to quality education and reinforce its standing as a leader in higher learning across Africa.
The partnership is expected to enrol its first cohort of students in August 2026, with plans to scale progressively to 10,000 active learners annually.
For his part, Dr. Jeff Bordes commended UCC’s leadership, stating that the University had demonstrated that innovation can be pursued without compromising academic integrity. He revealed that Astria Learning would provide capital investment, technological infrastructure, global marketing, digital library resources, secure proctoring systems and AI-powered academic support tools to ensure a seamless learning experience.

The CEO was accompanied by Astria Learning’s Global Operations Coordinator, Ms. Ana Eristavi, and staff member, Mr. Maxwell Acheampong.
The MoU signals a strong advocacy for inclusive and technology-driven education — a move that could significantly reshape access to higher learning in Ghana and beyond.
