UMaT Launches UNESCO World Engineering Day 2026 with Outreach to Second Cycle Schools

The University of Mines and Technology has officially kickstarted the 2026 UNESCO World Engineering Day celebration with a strategic outreach to selected second cycle institutions within the Municipality.

The initiative forms part of activities marking World Engineering Day and aligns with this year’s global theme: “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization.”

Taking engineering beyond lecture halls and laboratories, the UMaT team engaged students through interactive sessions designed to demystify the profession and spark interest in science, technology and innovation.

The outreach emphasised how engineering remains a driving force behind sustainable development — from infrastructure and clean energy to digital transformation and industrial growth. Students were encouraged to see engineering not merely as a career option, but as a powerful tool for solving real-world challenges.

Through practical discussions and engaging presentations, the team highlighted the role of smart engineering solutions in addressing climate change, resource management and technological advancement, while contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The exercise also sought to inspire critical thinking, creativity and innovation among young learners, positioning them as future problem-solvers capable of shaping Ghana’s development trajectory.

By directly engaging second cycle students, UMaT is reinforcing its commitment to nurturing the next generation of engineers — young minds who will harness innovation and digitalization to build a more sustainable and resilient future.

As the 2026 UNESCO World Engineering Day celebrations unfold, the message from UMaT is clear: the future of sustainable development lies in smart engineering, and that future begins with today’s students.
