The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has renewed calls for stronger gender inclusion in academia, following a vibrant corporate launch to commemorate International Women’s Day on March 12, 2026.
The event brought together faculty, stakeholders, and members of the academic community in a powerful celebration of the achievements and contributions of female academics across diverse disciplines. It served not only as a moment of recognition, but also as a platform for advocacy—highlighting the critical role women continue to play in teaching, research, and national development.
Participants reflected on the progress made over the years while acknowledging the persistent gaps that still limit the full participation and advancement of women in higher education. Speakers emphasized the need for intentional policies, mentorship opportunities, and institutional support systems to empower more women to rise into leadership positions within academia.
The celebration was marked by inspiring conversations centered on empowerment, resilience, and equal opportunity, encouraging young female academics to pursue excellence and break barriers in their respective fields.
Beyond the ceremony, the message was clear: empowering women in academia is not just a symbolic gesture—it is a strategic investment in Ghana’s future. When women are given the space and support to thrive, institutions become stronger, research becomes more impactful, and national development is accelerated.
As the UMaT branch of UTAG leads this advocacy, stakeholders are being urged to move beyond celebration and commit to sustained action that ensures equity, inclusion, and opportunity for all.
