ECG’s Billing Practices Push Twifo Communities to Breaking Point

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Twifo Praso District has become a major source of frustration for residents of Twifo Hemang and surrounding communities. Its billing practices and disconnection policies are creating unbearable hardships, forcing many households and businesses into despair. The crisis has reached alarming levels, prompting urgent calls for government intervention.

Consumers report a disturbing pattern of billing inconsistencies. A household may, for instance, receive an August bill of 300 GHS, only for ECG to later dismiss it as inaccurate. Without explanation, a much higher “adjusted” bill is then issued. These adjustments, which occur every three months, have left residents confused, overburdened, and questioning the integrity of ECG’s billing system.

To compound matters, ECG often issues estimated bills without justification, further inflating costs. In some cases, deductions are not even reflected in accounts, creating additional financial strain and mistrust.

For residents of Twifo Atti-Morkwa, Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira, and nearby areas, ECG has become a “scare-monster.” Families are unable to keep up with skyrocketing bills, with some resorting to cutting off their own power supply just to escape the mounting debts. Small businesses, heavily reliant on electricity, are also being crippled, stifling local economic activity and worsening poverty.

It is imperative that the government and the Minister of Energy step in immediately. ECG must be held accountable, its billing practices reviewed, and systems put in place to ensure fairness, accuracy, and affordability.

The people of Twifo—and indeed all Ghanaians—deserve reliable electricity without the fear of arbitrary charges and disconnections. The time for decisive action is now.
