UG Hands Over 5 Acres to SRC and GRASAG for Landmark Hostel Project

The University of Ghana (UG) has officially allocated five acres of land to the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) for the construction of a landmark, jointly owned hostel facility.

The land, located near the Small Animal Hospital on the Legon campus, was handed over at a brief ceremony on Friday, September 13, 2025. The SRC will manage two acres, while GRASAG takes responsibility for three. The project seeks to provide a lasting solution to the persistent student accommodation crisis.

This initiative dates back to 2021, when both student bodies resolved to establish dedicated development funds through student levies, prioritizing hostel infrastructure. Contributions from successive student cohorts will continue to support the project, with oversight by Development Fund Boards.

Performing the handover, Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo pledged management’s full support, while stressing accountability and transparency in managing funds. She reminded stakeholders that all contributions, once administered through the University, must be treated as public resources.

The first phase of the project will deliver a 1,000-bed capacity hostel, with long-term plans targeting over 15,000 beds upon completion. Once realized, it will rank among the largest student-led infrastructure projects in Ghana’s tertiary education sector.

SRC and GRASAG leaders hailed the handover as a “historic milestone” in student leadership, demonstrating students’ ability to take concrete action to address their own challenges. They also called on alumni, stakeholders, and well-wishers to support the initiative to ensure timely completion.

When completed, the hostel facility is expected to significantly ease the accommodation deficit on campus, providing affordable, accessible housing for thousands of UG students in the years ahead.
