Education Minister Urges GFA to Invest in School and University Sports Development

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr. Kurt Okraku, has paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Education to discuss Ghana’s recent sporting successes, including the national team’s qualification for the FIFA World Cup and the University for Development Studies’ (UDS) triumph at the 2025 FISU World University Championship.

The meeting highlighted the crucial link between education, youth development, and sports excellence, emphasizing how schools, colleges, and universities serve as vital platforms for discovering and nurturing football talent across the country.

During the engagement, the Minister of Education commended the GFA for its efforts in developing football at all levels but urged the Association to pay greater attention to sports at the pre-tertiary and tertiary levels.

“Our Senior High Schools, colleges, and universities are the true breeding grounds for young talent,” the Minister said. “Investing in their development will strengthen the foundation of Ghana’s sports—especially football.”

He further called for increased support for inter-school competitions, talent scouting programs, and improved sports infrastructure, stressing that such investments are essential for building a robust pipeline of athletes who can compete both nationally and internationally.

“By supporting structured school and campus sports programs, we can nurture the next generation of national athletes and ensure the sustained growth of sports in the country,” he added.

The discussions also explored opportunities for strategic collaboration between the Ministry and the GFA to integrate sports development into Ghana’s education system, promote physical education, and strengthen youth-focused training programs.

Mr. Okraku reaffirmed the GFA’s commitment to grassroots development and expressed interest in deepening partnerships that align education and football as key drivers of national growth.

The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to pursue joint initiatives that will enhance sports education, expand access to modern training facilities, and elevate Ghana’s position in global sports.
