All Set for Ghanaian Nurses to Work in Grenada — Mahama Strengthens Africa-Caribbean Ties

Ghana and Grenada have taken a significant step toward deepening bilateral cooperation as arrangements are now complete for Ghanaian nurses to begin work in the Caribbean nation.

The announcement was made during the visit of the Prime Minister of Grenada, Hon. Dickon Mitchell, who is currently in Ghana to strengthen ties between the two nations. Discussions also covered 20 additional labour mobility agreements currently under negotiation with other countries, signaling Ghana’s growing commitment to creating global employment opportunities for its skilled workforce.

In a move that promises to further unite the African and Caribbean people, both governments are holding strategic talks to establish the first-ever direct flight between Africa and the Caribbean — a historic initiative expected to boost tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.

Welcoming Prime Minister Mitchell, President John Dramani Mahama — who serves as the African Union Champion for Reparations — reaffirmed his dedication to bridging the “artificial African-Caribbean divide” created by the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

During the visit, several fascinating connections between Ghana and Grenada were revealed:

  • Prime Minister Mitchell disclosed that DNA tracing confirms his Ghanaian ancestry.

  • Studies show that 75% of Grenadians have ancestral links to Ghana.

  • Both Ghana and Grenada’s ruling parties share the same name — the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

  • Each NDC holds a two-thirds parliamentary majority following recent elections.

  • Interestingly, both parties made their comeback to power with landslide victories after losing two previous elections.

The visit marks a renewed sense of unity and shared destiny between Africa and the Caribbean, grounded in history, culture, and common aspirations for progress.
