The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, on Wednesday held discussions with Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Gedion Timothewos, as the two leaders examined the rapidly evolving political and security landscape across the continent.

The meeting focused on strengthening the African Union’s central role in preventive diplomacy, conflict prevention, humanitarian action and sustainable development. Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of coordinated efforts between the AU and Regional Economic Communities to address emerging threats to peace and stability.
A major point of concern during the talks was the worsening conflict in Sudan. The AU Chairperson and the Ethiopian Foreign Minister expressed deep alarm over the deteriorating humanitarian situation and stressed the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of life and regional destabilization.

On South Sudan, the two leaders underscored the critical importance of all parties fully honouring their commitments under the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS). They warned that failure to adhere to the peace agreement risks igniting renewed political instability.
The situation in the Sahel also featured prominently in the discussions. The leaders highlighted the need for countries that have experienced unconstitutional changes of government to present clear, credible and time-bound roadmaps for a swift return to constitutional order.
Both sides agreed that the AU must remain firmly engaged in promoting peace, democratic governance and stability across Africa, especially at a time when multiple regions face complex security, political and humanitarian challenges.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen collaboration in addressing these pressing continental issues.
