Ghana Demands Justice as Foreign Ministry Probes Killing of Ghanaian Student in Latvia

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has ordered immediate investigations into the reported killing of a Ghanaian student, Nana Adjei, in Latvia, following the circulation of a deeply disturbing video online.

According to the Minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has activated relevant diplomatic channels to establish the facts surrounding the incident and to ensure that justice is pursued without delay. He assured the Ghanaian public that regular updates will be provided as investigations progress.

Beyond the demand for justice, the incident has reignited serious concerns about racism, xenophobia, and the safety of African and Black students living abroad. Advocacy groups and concerned citizens are calling on host countries to go beyond expressions of sympathy and take concrete action to confront racial violence, discrimination, and hate crimes.

Hon. Ablakwa was unequivocal in his stance, stating that no one harms a Ghanaian anywhere in the world and gets away with it—a clear message that Ghana will continue to stand firmly behind its citizens and demand accountability under international law.

As Ghanaian students increasingly pursue education opportunities overseas, the tragedy highlights the urgent need for:

  • Stronger protections for international students

  • Clear accountability mechanisms for racially motivated crimes

  • Robust diplomatic engagement to safeguard the lives and dignity of Africans abroad

The fight against racism is not optional—it is a global responsibility. Justice for Nana Adjei must also serve as a call to action for governments, institutions, and societies to confront prejudice, uphold human rights, and ensure that diversity is met with protection, not violence.

Ghana’s resolve in this matter sends a clear signal: the lives of its citizens matter, and racism, in any form and in any country, must be challenged and defeated.
