The Akwatia Police Command has arrested a man identified as Coffie Agyemang, a resident of Kwamang, for allegedly attempting to sell his three-year-old son for GHS1 million in a disturbing case that has shocked the local community.
According to sources close to Akwatia TV, the suspect reportedly confided in a friend about severe financial difficulties and expressed an intention to sell his child. Alarmed by the disclosure, the friend promptly reported the matter to the police, triggering an investigation.
Police sources indicate that officers initiated a covert operation in which law enforcement personnel posed as interested parties to verify the suspect’s claims. During the engagement, the suspect allegedly agreed to the proposed amount and arranged a meeting at a designated location.
Upon arrival at the agreed meeting point with the child, Coffie Agyemang was arrested by officers who had been monitoring the situation. The child was immediately secured and placed under protective care.
The Akwatia Police Command has not yet issued a formal statement on the case, citing ongoing investigations. Attempts by Akwatia TV to obtain additional details from police officials have so far been unsuccessful.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and concern within the Akwatia community, with residents and civil society groups calling for stronger child protection mechanisms and social support systems for vulnerable families.
Child welfare advocates have emphasized the need for early intervention, mental health support, and economic assistance for families under extreme distress to prevent similar incidents.
As investigations continue, authorities say their immediate priority remains the safety and well-being of the child, while ensuring that due legal processes are followed. The police are expected to provide further updates as the case progresses.
