Elmina Residents Celebrate Appeal Court Victory for GN Bank

Residents and indigenes of Elmina in the Central Region have welcomed with excitement the recent Court of Appeal ruling directing the Bank of Ghana to restore the operating licence of GN Savings and Loans, formerly known as GN Bank.

The ruling, which overturned an earlier High Court decision that upheld the revocation of the bank’s licence in 2019, has sparked jubilation among many residents who believe the decision marks a major step toward restoring confidence in Ghanaian-owned businesses and the country’s financial sector.

Leading the celebration was Mr. John Quayson, popularly known as “Manoma,” who described the judgement as fair, timely and beneficial to local economic growth. According to him, the decision has renewed hope among customers, former workers and communities that depended on the operations of the bank.

Speaking to the media in Elmina, Mr. Quayson said the restoration of the licence would not only empower indigenous enterprises but also strengthen public trust in local institutions and businesses.

“This judgement has brought relief and hope to many people. We believe it will help restore confidence in local businesses and support economic growth in our communities,” he stated.

Residents who gathered during the celebration also expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for what they described as creating an enabling environment for justice, business growth and investor confidence.

The group further thanked the judiciary for what they termed a courageous and landmark ruling, while some traditional leaders and residents also offered gratitude to the traditional gods of Elmina, saying their long-standing prayers and appeals had finally been answered.

The latest development comes several years after the revocation of GN Bank’s licence by the Bank of Ghana, a decision that generated widespread public reaction, particularly in Elmina where the bank had significant support and influence.

At the peak of the controversy, hundreds of residents embarked on demonstrations and public protests, calling for the reinstatement of the bank and urging authorities to reconsider the decision.

In its recent ruling, the Court of Appeal in Accra directed the restoration of the operating licence of GN Savings and Loans, describing the earlier revocation as unfair and unreasonable.

Following the judgement, the Elmina group has called on state institutions to continue upholding fairness, justice and due process in matters involving businesses, properties, licences and assets within the country.

Residents say they remain hopeful that the decision will contribute to renewed investor confidence, economic stability and greater support for indigenous Ghanaian enterprises.
