About 50,000 first-year students in Ghana’s public tertiary institutions have received full reimbursement of their academic user fees, sparking nationwide celebrations and widespread gratitude. The reimbursements follow the official launch of the “No Fees Stress” policy by President John Dramani Mahama in Koforidua.
The announcement has been met with jubilation on campuses such as the University of Ghana, KNUST, and the University of Cape Coast. Students flooded social media with messages of appreciation, thanking the President for easing the financial pressure on families across the country.
The policy, which was a key campaign promise during Mahama’s 2024 election campaign, waives academic user fees for all first-year students in public universities, technical universities, and colleges of education. The Ministry of Education, working with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), confirmed that disbursements are ongoing and that all eligible students are expected to receive reimbursements before the end of the academic term.
At the launch event held at Koforidua Technical University, President Mahama emphasized the policy’s focus on equity and opportunity. He shared stories of gifted students whose aspirations were cut short due to financial hardship, saying the initiative is a direct response to such challenges.
“Too many talented young people have been forced to abandon their academic ambitions simply because they couldn’t afford fees,” he said. “This policy is a promise kept and a message to every Ghanaian child that poverty should never be a barrier to education.”
The “No Fees Stress” policy forms part of a broader effort by the Mahama-led administration to expand access to tertiary education and address the needs of Ghana’s growing youth population. Officials say more reforms aimed at creating a fairer, more inclusive education system are on the horizon.
Well done! Mr. President 🙌🏼
A Visionary Leader indeed🔥
