A student of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Nyankpala campus, Salifu Nurudeen, has been sentenced to death by the Tamale High Court after being found guilty of the murder of his colleague, Wumpini Mohammed Zakiu.
The tragic incident, which occurred in September 2024, was reportedly triggered by a love triangle involving Nurudeen, his ex-girlfriend, and the deceased. According to investigations, the female student, also enrolled at UDS, had ended her relationship with Nurudeen and was subsequently involved with Wumpini.
On September 25, 2024, Wumpini was found dead with multiple stab wounds. His mobile phone was also missing from the crime scene. Following a detailed investigation, the Police Cybercrime Unit traced the missing device to Nurudeen’s residence, where it was discovered concealed beneath his bed.
Further forensic and digital evidence revealed that Nurudeen had used the victim’s phone to send deceptive messages. One message was sent to the ex-girlfriend, posing as Wumpini to end the relationship, while another was directed to a friend of the deceased.
Nurudeen was eventually apprehended after being lured to Tamale’s Jubilee Park. During interrogation, he admitted to sending the messages from Wumpini’s phone but denied any involvement in the murder.
After reviewing the evidence, the Tamale High Court found him guilty of murder and imposed the mandatory sentence of death.
