A solemn burial ceremony will be held today for two Muslim victims of the tragic military helicopter crash that occurred on August 6.
The late Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala, former Minister for Environment, and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, former Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, will be laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
According to a statement from the Presidency, the ceremony will commence with Janazah prayers at 2:00 p.m. at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra, followed by burial at 2:30 p.m. at the Military Cemetery.
The two were among eight people who lost their lives when a Ghana Air Force helicopter went down in the Adansi-Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. The tragedy has sparked nationwide mourning, with tributes pouring in from all sectors of society.
Today’s rites are expected to be attended by President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President, the Speaker of Parliament, and the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Religious leaders, including the National Chief Imam and the leader of the Ambariya Sunni Group, as well as families of the deceased, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries, will also be present.
While the two Muslim victims will be buried today, a state funeral for all eight victims—bringing together multiple faith traditions—has been scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square. This will serve as the nation’s collective farewell, honouring the service and sacrifice of those who perished.
