Cape Coast has recorded the collapse of two additional buildings, raising the number of structural failures in the area to six within the past week.
The latest incident occurred late Thursday night, June 26, when a residential property at Brofoyedur in central Cape Coast caved in around 10 p.m. after a torrential downpour.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as residents had already sought shelter outside due to earlier flooding in the house.
Despite the imminent danger posed by the damaged structure, occupants have been hesitant to relocate. One resident, Esi Mary, appealed for government assistance in an interview with newsmen on Friday, June 27.
In a separate case, a storey building under construction collapsed at West End, near Adisadel College. While there were no reported casualties, the string of recent incidents has intensified concerns about building safety in the municipality.
Responding to the situation, Central Regional Minister Eduamoah Okyere Ekow Panyin instructed the Cape Coast Municipal Assembly to immediately demolish all weakened structures to avert further disasters.
