Vice President Engages Ghana Prisons Service Leadership on Reforms and Welfare

Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving conditions within the country’s prisons, pledging support for reforms aimed at rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.

The Vice President made the assurance during a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Prisons Service, led by the Director General, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, esq. The discussions focused on key challenges confronting the Service and strategies to address them.

She underscored the importance of strong public education on prison reforms and encouraged greater collaboration between the Prisons Service, other state agencies, and the media.

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang commended the Service for its ongoing interventions, highlighting in particular its growing agricultural initiatives, which she described as a promising campaign with the potential to enhance self-sufficiency and skill development among inmates.

“As a responsible nation, it is our duty to ensure dignified conditions for inmates, to offer meaningful reforms, and to provide the necessary support for their reintegration into society,” she stressed.

The meeting forms part of government’s broader agenda to strengthen correctional services, improve inmate welfare, and ensure that Ghana’s prisons system not only enforces justice but also promotes rehabilitation and second chances.
