Engineer Urges Innovation and Digitalisation for Sustainable Future at World Engineering Day Event

An engineer and land surveyor, Engr. Surv. Dr. Dr. Ebenezer Ankomah Gyamera, has called on engineers and students to embrace innovation, digitalisation, and ethical leadership to build a sustainable future.

He made the call while delivering a keynote address during the 2026 World Engineering Day celebration held at the assembly hall of Biriwa Technical Institute under the theme “Smart Engineering for Sustainable Future Through Innovation and Digitalization.”

Addressing faculty, students, invited guests and representatives from REACO International, Dr. Gyamera emphasised that engineering has always been a driving force behind human progress and civilisation.

Engineering as the Foundation of Civilisation

According to him, engineering dates back to ancient civilizations, from the pyramids of Egypt to early trade routes and infrastructure systems that connected societies.

He explained that the philosophy of engineering is rooted in solving human problems in a structured, creative, and sustainable way, noting that the profession is guided by three core principles—order, precision, and responsibility.

“As a surveyor and engineer, I often say that before anything is built, it must first be understood. Surveying defines space, engineering transforms it, and construction gives it form,” he noted.

Digital Transformation in Engineering

Dr. Gyamera highlighted the growing role of digital technologies in modern engineering practice, noting that the industry has evolved significantly from traditional tools to advanced digital systems.

He pointed out that the sector has transitioned from manual drafting and paper maps to satellite positioning systems, Building Information Modelling (BIM), and geospatial intelligence technologies, which improve efficiency, transparency, and accuracy.

He also urged professionals to view emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, drones, and automation as tools that enhance engineering practice rather than threats to the profession.

However, he cautioned that technological advancement must be guided by ethical responsibility.

“Technology without ethics can be dangerous. Engineering must always serve humanity,” he stressed.

Sustainability as a Moral Responsibility

Touching on global development challenges, Dr. Gyamera noted that modern engineers must respond to issues such as climate change, rapid urbanisation, resource depletion, and infrastructure deficits, particularly in developing countries.

He stressed that engineering in the 21st century must move beyond strength and durability to include sustainability considerations such as environmental impact, carbon footprint reduction, lifecycle costing, and resilient infrastructure development.

“Sustainability is not optional. It is a moral obligation for engineers,” he added.

Role of Technical Education

The engineer also encouraged students of Biriwa Technical Institute to see their training as preparation for nation-building rather than merely employment.

He emphasised that technical education remains the backbone of industrial development, urging students to develop digital skills, critical thinking abilities, and ethical leadership.

“No country has developed without strong technical and engineering capacity,” he said.

Opportunities for Ghana and Africa

Dr. Gyamera further highlighted opportunities for Ghana and Africa in areas such as smart land administration systems, digital cadastral mapping, renewable energy infrastructure, intelligent transportation systems, and affordable housing technologies.

He urged professionals on the continent to develop African solutions to African challenges through innovation and collaboration.

The event formed part of global activities marking World Engineering Day, aimed at promoting the role of engineering in sustainable development and encouraging young people to pursue careers in the field.
